Fred Barber, my grandad, in old age
It All Began in 1940...
It all began in 1940, when a born and bred Yorkshireman, Fred Barber, started out at sea as a Miner at the age of 15 years old, catching fish and cooking for the fellow soldiers. Not long after, Fred became a Head Cook for the Merchant Navy, ensuring all the soldiers who fought for England in WW2 were all fed well—and his pies were a winner just like the British!
Stone Mason by trade in his 20s and 30s until his retirement, Fred Barber laid all the Yorkshire stone across Leeds, Bradford, Baildon, Guiseley and all of Yorkshire. To this day, the Yorkshires natural heritage of its Yorkshire Stone is famous across the country as well as world-wide.
Fred was a hard-working family man, with 6 sons and 2 daughters to feed. Having an allotment, he was proud of his greens, and what he grew always ended up in his oven. He baked the best traditional British pies like a steak and kidney, meat and potato, fisherman pies and many more.
So what did Fred do? From providing for his large family who never went hungry, Fred took his family fishing, and those fish ended up in the pies he made. Fred became quite popular in his community and was well known for his kind loving nature. He taught his daughter (my mother) all his recipes, which she passed down to me, and here we are today. Av’ A Pie Yorkshire proudly handcrafts their pies with love and distributes them across the UK, with the best loving memory of the great Fred Barber 1925 – 2008
